Getting the Right Pilates Clothes

Most people attend an exercise class to get some kind of physical or health benefit. If you are paying good money for a class, then you’ll want to get the most out of it as possible, so it is important to make sure you have the right clothing that will allow you to enjoy the class without being uncomfortable or distracted. For those practising Pilates, yoga clothes are probably the most suitable because they allow your body to stretch and bend in the ways it needs to, as well as being made from super soft and comfortable fabrics which are breathable.

Your Pilates clothes shouldn’t be baggy, as your instructor needs to be able to check your shape. Pilates is all about strengthening your core, so your instructor will need to see that your core is properly engaged and in the right position. Wearing baggy, heavy or bulky clothing will prevent this and will also feel uncomfortable.

Although not an energetic form of exercise, like yoga, Pilates does work your body hard, and you should wear clothing that is breathable and wicks away sweat. This is important for you to remain comfortable and get the most out of your session. You should also consider wearing simple and comfortable underwear (cotton is generally best) which won’t ride up or dig in during movement.

Pilates is usually performed barefoot, so you won’t normally need any particular footwear. If you don’t like the idea of going barefoot, invest in some gripping socks to make sure you are safe and stable.
